Sabotage - The word originated in northern Europe as a description for and honoring of an event that occurred many years ago. Seems some factory workers didn't like how the mill was being run by management and decided to throw their shoes into the turning gears of the mill as a sign of protest.
It wouldn't have been so bad if the shoes were made of leather or similar soft material. Unfortunate for the owner, the shoes were made of wood. And in commemoration of that fateful event, the fine art of throwing shoes into the moving gears of any process that caused all work from progressing forward - our small wooden shoe, called a "sabot" - we now have the word "sabotage." Talk about getting a clog in your cogs.
