Invest Now or Pay Dearly Later
Have you ever been in a position where some of your key employees left and you have no
clue as to what they did much less how they did it? Or perhaps you’re one of the few bosses who
really do know well what your current employees’ tasks are and how they should do them. You
may even have all the tasks clearly laid out in your mind and the entire process that each of these
tasks entail too. You might even know the timing of all these 'to do’s' also and can readily
convey them when asked. Does all this matter if your employees leave and didn’t leave a written
record of their routines and how they are to be done? You’re still in the same situation. When
'push comes to shove,' you’re still going to have to dedicate a tremendous amount of time,
energy, money and spirit, directly or indirectly, into retraining the 'newbie' when they come on
board.
As employers, this is not a circumstance that we would like to be in and if we’re honest
about the thought, it’s just as uncomfortable to imagine it. Yet, the simple fact is, if you have
employees, there is a probability that they will not be there someday when you need them most -
leaving you to try to figure out what they did and how they did it.
Sadly enough, this is an accepted reality that most businesses must face every once in a
while. Especially when what is missing from the operation and many business "processes" is a
special key element that, when added, would save any operation an enormous amount of resource
use.
